Different disciplines – close to research and close to society

The Stockholm University Department of Human Geography offers courses in three different main fields of study – Human Geography, Urban and Regional Planning, and Geography – and at three different levels – First Cycle (under-graduate, 3 years), Second Cycle (graduate or master, 2 years), and Third Cycle (doctorial, 4 years). You can as a student in our department either study separate courses (5 weeks – 1 year) or a programme (2–4 years). Many of our courses and programmes are organized in co-operation with other departments at the University. Courses in other disiplines can be included in our programmes. Our courses are designed in close connection with research and include applications and field modules.

Meet leading researchers

As a student in the Department of Human Geography you will meet leading researchers and teachers in historical geography and landscape, population and gender geography, economic geography, geographic information system (GIS) and cartography, urban and regional planning, urban geography and development geography. You will study people's varied ways of living, thinking, planning, travel and work. You will learn to deal with the challenges of the future, gain knowledge of living conditions around the world and work with the concepts and techniques you need to understand contexts and see patterns.

Work after graduation

Our courses and programmes offer knowledge and skills to work with a variety of issues. They can include housing, economic growth, heritage protection, land use, environment, urban and regional planning, social and ethnic segregation, urban and regional development, transport and tourism. Human Geography is a key area for those who want a social science education for work in the analysis, management, planning and communication. The training in Urban and Regional Planning is focused on work in the various themes in both urban and regional development. A Geography education prepares for work on environmental and social issues from both a scientific and a social science perspective. These works can include local, national or international issues and relations.
