During theses work, field courses, guest lectures, more applied courses and project work researchers and teachers, students and practitioners’ meets. At conferences, in editorial boards and expert groups researchers and practitioners work together.

Former students (alumni) are key contacts between practice and academia. Several alumni are mentors for today’s students within the University mentor programme. In the framework of the Stockholm University Alumni Network a group for human geography and urban and regional planning is organized.

Researchers at the Department sometimes give public lectures and excursions for school classes. New doctors usually lecturers at the University public research days.

Faculty and other members of the Department are active in editorial boards of a number of scientific journals as well as in boards and committees etcetera in several scientific academies, associations and societies.

The secretariat for the Swedish Society for Town and Country Planning (with the Swedish Journal of Planning, PLAN) was housed at the Department for more than 10 years until 2015. In addition, the register of members in the Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography (SSAG) as well as the web site of the Society are managed from the Department.

Stockholm University is via the Department of Human Geography full member of the Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP).
